Jonny Lake is a Canadian chef and former Head Chef of The Fat Duck, known for his scientific, innovative approach to modern gastronomy, combining precision, creativity, and technical excellence.
Born in Ontario, Canada, Jonny Lake’s early fascination was with science, not cooking. While pursuing studies in physics and biology in Montreal, a part-time volunteer role at Santropol Roulant—a meals-on-wheels charity—unexpectedly set him on a culinary path. What began as meal packing evolved into a passion for cooking, revealing a natural talent and a hunger for learning that would define his career.
Determined to refine his skills, Jonny enrolled at Montreal’s Institut de Tourisme et d’Hôtellerie du Québec, excelling in its rigorous chef training program. A bursary after graduation led him to Italy, where he gained hands-on experience in Liguria and at one of the country’s most celebrated culinary institutions, L’Albereta Resort in Erbusco by Gualtiero Marchesi.
In 2005, Jonny joined The Fat Duck, where his analytical mind and creative curiosity found the perfect match. Rising through the ranks, he was appointed Head Chef in 2009. Known for his meticulous approach and tireless innovation, Jonny continues to lead one of the world’s most acclaimed kitchens, all while balancing the demands of fatherhood and a deep appreciation for the craft of others.
