Nelson Tanate is a Dutch chef of Moluccan and Dutch heritage, known for his refined technique, calm leadership, and deep respect for ingredients. Raised in a family where cooking played a central role, he discovered his passion early, working in a bakery at twelve and later studying hospitality in Almelo. An internship at Restaurant Dorset introduced him to high-level cuisine, and soon after, a trial day at De Librije marked the beginning of a long, transformative journey.
Starting as an intern, Tanate advanced steadily through dedication, discipline, and a drive to master every station. Over more than a decade, he evolved into a leading figure within the restaurant, eventually becoming its head chef. His cooking reflects both precision and personal heritage, subtly integrating flavors inspired by his Moluccan background.
Tanate earned the distinguished title of SVH Meesterkok, one of the highest professional honors a Dutch chef can achieve, and later received three knives at The Best Chef Awards — a rare international recognition of culinary mastery. Committed to mentoring younger cooks, he continues to champion craftsmanship, humility, and innovation, shaping the next generation of culinary talent.
